MIECZYSŁAW KARŁOWICZ STATE MUSIC SCHOOL COMPLEX IN CRACOW: Tomasz Chmiel / conductor

Tomasz Chmiel was born in 1970 in Rzeszów, where he initially completed courses at the Community Music Centre, and then graduated from the State Secondary Music School. In 1989-96 he studied at the Academy of Music in the conducting class of Professor Jerzy Katlewicz and in the piano class of docent Marek Koziak, completing both with honours. He currently the post of senior teaching assistant at the Academy. He has participated many times in seminars at Helmuth Rilling’s Bach Academy in Stuttgart. In April of 1994 he received 1st place at the 1st Witold Lutosławski Young Conductors’ Review in Białystok. The Austrian Cultural Institute in Warsaw has given him an award in the form of participation in a master class in Salzburg. The artist has twice received grants from the Ministry of Culture and Art (1992/93 and 1993/94). In June 1995 he received a Creative Grant of the City of Cracow. One year later he participated in the Annaghmakerrig Sinfonia Summer School in South Ireland. He has been working together with the Cracow Opera for several years. Apart from his teaching activities at the Academy of Music in Cracow, Chmiel is a conductor of the Young Cracow Philharmonic. In April 2002 he obtained the title of doctor of conducting. For a number of seasons he worked at the Music Theatre in Lublin. He also worked together with the Cracow Chamber Opera. Tomasz Chmiel conducted many concerts in Poland – with Philharmonic Orchestras of Cracow Szczecin, Białystok, Rzeszów, Łódź, as well as with the Toruń Chamber Orchestra. He has also conducted abroad on concert tours with the Częstochowa Philharmonic Orchestra in Sweden and South Korea and with the Young Cracow Philharmonic in the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Germany.
