“Olivier Charlier: pedigree sound, perfect, energetic bowing, a solid technique”. ResMusica
Never one to seek media fame, Olivier Charlier has become one of the best violinists of his generation. This modest musician has gone from first prize at the CNSMD in Paris at the age of four to prestigious international competitions in Munich, Montreal, the Sibelius Competition, the J. Thibaud Competition, Indianapolis and Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York. Charlier studied with Nadia Boulanger, Yehudi Menuhin and Henryk Szeryng, achieving success soon afterwards. Currently, Charlier may rightly be considered part of the violin school of Jacques Thibaud, Ginette Neveu and Christian Ferras and take pride in making it famous on concert stages around the world. He has performed with approximately fifty French orchestras, as well as with renowned ensembles including the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Mirroring his eclectic interests, Charlier’s recording output encompasses a wide-ranging repertoire of concertos – by Mendelssohn, Dutilleux, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, E. Gregson, G. Schurmann, R. Gerhard, Mozart, as well as sonatas. Together with Jean Hubeau he has recorded numerous works of French music and with pianist Brigitte Engerer many of the major works by Beethoven, Schumann and Grieg. Olivier Charlier is a lecturer at the CNSMD in Paris and is regularly invited to sit in juries at international competitions in Munich, Hanover, Indianapolis and the Jacques Thibaud Competition.
