LA FOLLE JOURNEE DE VARSOVIE

Born in Paris in 1985, South-Korean flautist Sangah Nah honed her skills at the Paris Conservatory, from which she graduated with honours and afterwards at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP) in the class of Sophie Cherrier, graduating with a Master’s degree in 2010. She has enhanced her musical education through piccolo lessons with Pierre Dumail and participation in master classes with Alain Marion, Peter-Lukas Graf, Felix Ranggli and Emily Beynon. A laureate of numerous competitions in South Korea, including the Ihwa-Kyunghyang, the Seoul Flute Festival Competition and the Korean Flute Association competition, she received distinctions at the Young Artists’ Competition in Nagoya (Japan) and in France (including the competition in Picardie and the Buffet Crampon competition). She has been also developing her orchestral playing skills by playing in the Verbier Festival Orchestra (2007-2009), the Festival ensemble of Stuttgart, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Orchestre National de Lorraine and the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne. She is a soloist in the Paris Conservatory Graduates’ Orchestra since 2009. At the outset of her career, she has already performed in Korea, Austria and France.

PIERROT LUNAIRE

Thanks to its avant-garde character combined with a modern sound, Pierrot Lunaire has provided worldwide fame for Schönberg. In the 20^th century it has also inspired such works as Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Boulez’ Le marteau sans maître (The Hammer Without a Master). The work achieved instant success. It has since been considered a masterpiece and Roland Manuel has thus expressed his admiration: “The incomparable colour of the music in Pierrot Lunaire, an expressive image of a nightmare unfolds before us, a rending cruelty which switches instantly from irony to sobs, from terror to tenderness, a source of exquisite beauty […].”
