“Rich in nuance, excellent control of rhythm and noble phrasing. The music was by turn lofty and dazzling, taking on shape under Demarquette’s dexterous bow”. Concert Classic
Accepted into the CNSMD in Paris at the age of 13, Henri Demarquette studied with Philippe Muller and Maurice Gendron. He unanimously received first prize upon graduation, he then went on to study with Pierre Fournier, Paul Tortelier and Janos Starker in Bloomington in the United States. Noticed by Yehudi Menuhin, who has invited him to perform Dvorák’s Cello Concerto under his direction, Demarquette has begun a dazzling international career which has led him to perform in many capital cities of the world, accompanied by French and foreign orchestras, including the Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Sinfonia Varsovia and Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. A valued chamber musician, he has achieved exceptional understanding with pianists Brigitte Engerer, Michel Dalberto, Boris Berezovsky and Jean-Philippe Collard. Demarquette regularly plays contemporary music, causing contemprary composers to write many new works. His discography reflects his open mind, containing many award-winning discs with music from Bach to contemporary composers, through Haydn (two concertos), Beethoven (complete cello sonatas with M. Dalberto), Brahms, Chopin (complete works for cello and piano, recorded together with B. Engerer), as well as French music. His two latest discs with works by Saint-Saëns and Olivier Greif received the “Choc” prize from Classica magazine. Henri Demarquette plays an instrument made in 1697 by Italian luthier Goffredo Cappa with a Persois bow made in 1820.
